Veterinary practice management software (PIMS)

$99–$699 / monthpublished plan rates · not a complete billSee price evidence ↓

Compare veterinary PIMS by client/patient identity, encounter continuity, treatment sheets, diagnostics, inventory and billing. Vetspire, IDEXX Neo and Covetrus Pulse publish workflow material to evaluate with your clinic. Have clinical staff test real tasks in a safe demo and get conversion boundaries in writing.

Veterinary PIMS workflows join a client, animal patient, encounter, treatment, medication, diagnostics and charge. Test clinical continuity and the handoff across roles; do not choose from a calendar screenshot alone.

The cost case · Veterinary practices

What the software costs—and where your margin can improve.

Start with the bill and one costly workflow. The comparison is straightforward: recurring software costs you can actually remove, minus the hosting, AI, integrations and upkeep a replacement needs. Time saved is a separate gain, and only becomes margin when the business can use it.

Current software · researched prices

Veterinary practices software runs $99 to $699 a month across the 6 vendors that publish prices. A website-related price point in the research is $699 a month; check whether it is a plan rate or a separate fee. 57 of 96 vendors have quote-only pricing in our research.

Published starting prices are not a like-for-like quote. Confirm the plans, seats, add-ons, payment fees and setup your workflow requires.

A focused tool · under your control

Pay for the parts this workflow needs.

One time: map the rules, build, test edge cases, move only the data needed and train the people who use it.

Each month: affordable hosting, coding-AI usage, any database or integrations, backups and maintenance. Price these for the actual application; a $0 or low hosting tier is not the total cost.

You control: the code repository, domain, data and service accounts. Someone on your side owns updates, access, recovery and support.

MarginVendor costs removed − the replacement’s full monthly operating cost.
Admin timeFirst target: Client and patient identity. Can the visit, communications, consent and invoice be attached to the correct client and animal, including multi-pet households?
Business valueDurable, documented margin can strengthen a business; buyers still assess risk and whether someone else can run the workflow.

The exact replacement cost depends on scope and usage. Bring your invoice and one frustrating task; we’ll map what can stay, what could be owned and the costs to verify.

What a safe switch means for veterinary practices

Build a service catalog and customer workspace, then staff availability, booking and reminders. Add packages or a customer portal after the core booking flow passes testing.

Neo (IDEXX)

You want to compare a cloud practice-management system alongside IDEXX laboratory and diagnostic workflows.

IDEXX describes Neo scheduling and consultation workflows and publishes integration material for its diagnostics.

Before choosing

Vendor documentation ↗

Covetrus Pulse (formerly eVetPractice)

You want to evaluate a connected practice platform spanning records, diagnostics, communications and inventory.

Covetrus describes Pulse workflows and connected supply/diagnostic features for veterinary practices.

Test the visit from check-in to follow-up

Use these questions with a vendor or a builder. The point is to see your own work completed, including the awkward cases.

Questions to ask and a concrete way to test the answer
What mattersAsk thisThen demonstrate this
Client and patient linksCan one client with multiple pets see the right history, consent and charge for each?Create a fictional household with two animals and check identity on appointment, encounter, diagnostic, medication and invoice.
Encounter and treatment sheetDo notes, orders, treatment tasks and discharge details remain connected to the visit?Open a sample encounter, add a diagnostic and task, complete it under a second role and inspect saved history.
Medication and inventoryCan staff trace a dispensed item from stock to patient record and invoice?Dispense a dummy product, record stock movement and verify charge and inventory report reconcile.
Diagnostics and follow-upHow are results, reminders and unresolved tasks assigned and closed?Add a synthetic result and future follow-up; verify responsible staff, client communication and task status.

Your demo script

Walk through one fictional patient encounter

Have clinic roles use invented data in a vendor-provided test environment.

  1. Create a fictional client with two pets and schedule one; verify the chart identity.
  2. Create an encounter, add a mock diagnostic and treatment task, then record discharge instructions.
  3. Dispense a sample product, update stock and invoice the client; reconcile the account.
  4. Add a follow-up task and request an export of the patient and linked visit records.

Map client, patient and encounter relationships

Ask for a conversion inventory covering clients, animal patients, encounters, notes, diagnostics, prescriptions, images, treatment sheets, invoices, inventory, reminders and permissions. Check shared accounts for multi-pet clients, integrations and excluded formats. Sample active and historical records with clinical staff and reconcile open balances before cutover.

Where a first build could stop

Do not replace patient records, prescribing, diagnostic integration or treatment execution without a reviewed clinical continuity and security scope. A separate public intake or report can be assessed if it does not become the system of record.

What does the software cost?

Veterinary practices software runs $99 to $699 a month across the 6 vendors that publish prices. A website-related price point in the research is $699 a month; check whether it is a plan rate or a separate fee. 57 of 96 vendors have quote-only pricing in our research.

Where the money goes

The practice management system is the core: Provet Cloud Pro is $299 a month including one vet, plus $129 for each additional vet. Online booking from Vetstoria is billed per location on top. Then a veterinary marketing agency charges a monthly retainer, plus a design fee, for the website, SEO and social posting. Most of those agencies don't publish prices.

What to keep

Keep your PIMS. It holds the medical record, the controlled-drug log, lab integrations and the pharmacy, and none of that is worth rebuilding.

What to verify

Ask providers to demonstrate this workflow using your edge cases. Check which plan includes each step, what costs extra and how your records can be exported.

Questions owners ask

Does veterinary software migration include diagnostic images and lab results?

That depends on system, format, vendor and integration. Get a written scope for images, result history and patient links, then verify samples with clinical staff.

Can custom software replace a veterinary PIMS?

Have the clinic assess clinical continuity, prescribing, diagnostics, privacy, backups, training and support first. A narrow intake or reporting connection may be more suitable when the PIMS supports care.

What should a veterinary software demo include?

Use a fictional patient to schedule an appointment, create an encounter, record a diagnostic and treatment, dispense a product, invoice the client and schedule follow-up. Test a second pet under the same client and verify the record relationships at each step.

What must I check before changing a veterinary PIMS?

Ask about client and patient records, encounter history, diagnostics and images, prescriptions, treatment sheets, inventory, reminders, account balances, permissions and integrations. Have clinical and billing staff check a representative conversion and reconcile open cases before cutover.

How much does veterinary practice management software cost?

Provet Cloud publishes US prices: Core is $249 a month with one vet plus $99 per additional vet, and Pro is $299 plus $129 per vet. ezyVet starts at $260.50 a month on a six-month initial term. Several others don't publish prices.

Does Provet Cloud include online booking?

Yes. Provet Cloud includes an online booking portal, so a clinic on Provet that also pays for a separate booking subscription should check whether it needs both.

How much does Vetstoria cost?

Vetstoria charges per location by team size, with Small, Medium and Large plans and custom pricing above that. It publishes prices in euros, so we don't quote them here. It is online booking only, with no contract.
